A Tribute to our founder, Edward Wadsworth Greene:
Edward got his Hair Dressing Roots when after his initial schooling he started as an assistant (or Junior) at the Madison Avenue Vidal Sasson Salon in NY. He had an interview with Vidal and another gentlemen by the name of Paul Mitchell (who was Sassoon’s manager/artistic director at the time) Edward flew through the training program and became Lead Stylist and then Salon Manager and finally General Manager for all of the Sassoon Salons in the US and Canada for several years.
Edward then came to Portland in 1974 via a corporation that was looking to buy an existing Beauty School. After much research and not finding a school that was willing to sell, they opted to open a Salon and begin training Stylists in the famous Sassoon cutting style. That Salon, Edward Wadsworth for Hair, opened in March 1975, located at 8650 SW Canyon Rd in Portland.
Edward’s arrival in Portland was a Big Deal for our local beauty industry, shaking things up as he introduced Sassoon’s Precision cutting method to the area. Other salons began picking up on his knowledge and Edward ended up doing hundreds of cutting classes for other stylists and salons that wanted to learn the method. The notoriety of his presence grew, and he was asked to participate as a sponsor of The Miss Oregon/ Miss America Program (the Salon ended up working with the Pageant for15 years) which included doing many contestants hair in Atlantic City for the Miss America Pageant In the late 70s through the mid 80’s Edward also appeared on KATU’s popular morning show, AM Northwest hosted by Margie Boule’ and the Late Jim Bosley and his segments became fan favorites.
At one point Edward had three salons in the Portland area.
He inspired and mentored so many over the years he was with us, and sadly was gone too soon, passing of cancer in 1988 Don Dutro, who had worked for Edward since 1976 and had been Manager since 1981, and his wife, Cheryl, purchased the Salon in 1990 after Edwards estate closed. It has been their privilege to have kept Edward Wadsworth for Hair thriving and connected as a continued Leading Salon in the Pacific NW to the present day.
Come Celebrate FIFTY years with us.
